The Nursing Shortage
For a recovering patient, nurses are the most
essential personnel in a hospital and the most important to the healing
process. A patient may see a doctor for a few minutes, but that same
patient will interact with nurses many times during the day. If the
patient has questions, problems, minor irritations, it is usually a
nurse who is called upon to deal with them. And if an emergency arises,
it is the nurse who is expected to respond instantly. But will the
nurse be there to respond? More and more that is becoming a critical
question to which the answer may not be the "yes" we all
expect it to be.
